A Metaphysical View of Transgender People

Monday, February 17, 2020

I recently posted a comment on an article on the Washington Post site which, in straightforward language, explained what I believe is happening for transgender people, so I decided to post it here (with some revisions).  This article reflects my religious beliefs, which are based primarily on the Seth Material, meaning that it also reflects some of the ideas expressed in the Seth Material.

Below the ellipsis is the text of the comment I made on the Post, with some revisions.

I have decided to "come out of the closet" and reveal what I really believe in this discussion.

I believe that we are all souls, that we reincarnate, and that we choose our gender before we are born.  Some of us make wrong choices, however.  Some souls want to avoid being a woman (women's lives are harder than men's lives in most societies, and childbirth is painful and life-threatening), and some souls want to avoid being a man (some societies demand more sacrifices from their men).  But according to the Seth Material (on which my religious views are based), all souls must live as both genders before they are through reincarnating on the Earth.

So let's talk about a particular soul, a hypothetical soul.  Let's say this soul has been a male in four lives and now needs to experience being a female.  But once again the soul chooses to be a male because he is afraid to be a woman.  Once the soul is born as a boy, the child feels a strong pull to be a female because that's the experience that the soul needs for its development, and thus a transgender person is created.

The problem started with the mistaken choice to be born as a male one more time.  The solution would seem to be to transition to being a female — but such a transition would make him a fake female who would not have the real experience of womanhood.  He would only be play-acting.

But the soul is determined to be a female and becomes obstinate about it.  The obstinacy is driven by the fundamental need of the soul to experience femaleness, which explains why some transgender women claim to be real women — they may not know what it feels like to be a woman, but they are certain that that is what they should be.  So the problem becomes, not just that the wrong choice was made before birth, but the obstinacy that the mistake must be fixed in the current life, even though fixing it won't really give the soul the experience it needs.

Once a wrong decision is made before birth, there really is no fixing it in the current life.  The soul must make the best of the wrong decision, and all options will prove to be unsatisfactory.  It should be noted also that it is the ego which is now demanding that the gender be changed, and caving to the demands of the ego is rarely the best choice.

If the individual “transitions” to being a female, at least he will have the appearance of what he wants, even if he can only play-act at being a woman.  But he won’t menstruate every month, and he won’t be able to give birth and be a natural mother, so the essence of being a female will be lost to him.  Furthermore, if his face has a masculine appearance, he will open himself up to ridicule, since very few societies accept transgender people.  But if he remains a man, then he will miss out entirely on the female experience, not experiencing even a little bit of it.  Faced with these two options, transitioning may be the best choice — provided, of course, that the society tolerates such things, and provided that transitioning is even possible.  Gender hormones and sex-change operations may not be available in the era that he lives in.

So that's my metaphysical view of what's happening with transgender people.  Since it is a religious view, I rarely raise it in discussions on the internet.  It has the benefit of explaining why transgender people are so very unhappy as the gender they are, and why they are so determined to change it, and why they are often unhappy after they transition.  It also explains why, once they transition, they want to believe that they are real men and women, and not just facsimiles — but the truth is that a trans woman can be no more than an imitation of a woman.  It also answers the question, "How do transgender people even know what it's like to be the opposite gender?"  The answer is, they don't, but deep down inside they know that they need that experience for their development to continue.  Becoming — i.e., growth and development — is what our existence is all about.

There is another possible reason for being transgender:  to teach the soul tolerance.  I think that this more often happens with homosexuality, however.  Both Muslims and Christians see homosexuality as one of the major sins that a person can commit, and all it should take is one or two incarnations as a homophobic bigot to cause a person to be born a homosexual (in order to learn tolerance).  I am sure that the same thing can happen with transexuality.  I myself worry about being reborn as a transgender person because I am so turned off to them in this life.
